Toxoplasmosis and Pregnancy?!?!?!
I know you are asking yourself…
What the heck is Toxoplasmosis? It is an infection caused by a parasite that attacks the body of those with a low or compromised immune system which includes pregnant women.
I am going to take the time to share with you:
- My story
- Details about my story
- Some facts about Toxoplasmosis
- The reality of the infection
- The impact that Toxoplasmosis has had on me and my baby
However, I will not be able to cover all the bullets above in one post as it would be too long and I doubt it would interest you to read that much. Instead, I will break down into different posts.
Let’s start with…
My Story
February I found out I was pregnant. No morning sickness yet though.
March About the 6th week or so I started to feel, not morning sickness, but baby sickness..meaning that I was nauseous and vomiting all day. In a short time, I started to feel much worse. Headaches so terrible that I couldn’t move my head, eyes or neck. I just felt miserable and plain worn out. There were days that I am not sure how I made it through. Thankfully it was the last month of my fiscal year at work so all I focused on was either trying to close business or move the opportunities through the sales cycle to start off the new fiscal year with a bang. I really thought that all of it was just the combination of stress and baby sickness. I mean…it was the toughest fiscal year I had in all of my sales career and I really thought I might could lose my job. That was how stressed I was. My blogging started to taper off significantly and it was all I could do to give Emma and Andreas much of me after a day of work.
April Sickness continued, although not with the same intensity as in March. I went to the doctors and had both the genetic blood and normal blood work done. At the end of the month, the nurse called and said she needed me to come back in for another blood test. It was routine and I was not to worry.
May I received a call that the second blood test confirmed that I had Toxoplasmosis. I had to start the antibiotics right away. BTW…the meds make me sick as well, both causing nausea and vomiting. At the end of the month, I had an amniocentesis performed to determine if the baby was infected, if it affected the genetics or the nervous system. At that appointment I was told that I had to continue the antibiotics as a preventative. While I understood, I was devastated, tired of being sick.
June Here I am, the 11th day of the month, and waiting for the results from the amnio scheduled for June 23rd.
I am a bit scared for a variety of reasons, but will share more about that in later posts.
What I hope to accomplish sharing this information with you is to:
- Let you know why I have been MIA and not blogging much and
- Educate you about Toxoplasmosis
