With Christmas here…I thought you might enjoy this recipe again. Especially with this cold weather!
I make this every year and usually several times during the season. This year, however, I had the opportunity to drink here in Germany at the Christmas Markt, aka Weinachts Markt!
So here it is…
Gluehwein Recipe!!
The recipe can vary a bit depending on the region and who makes it, but regardless…it is a fabulous drink on a cold winter day. You find it being served often at Christmas Markts and Fests around Germany during the winter months.
This is how I make it…
Reminder…I do not usually measure so I am going to do my best to give you some sort of idea as to how much of each ingredient. But I would taste along the way.
Ingredients
- 1 Bottle of red wine – unless you just heat up the wine and call it day, then you don’t have to purchase the best wine
- 1/4 – 1 cup Sugar
- 1/4 – 1 cup Orange Juice
- 2 or 3 Cinnamon Sticks
- 5 – 8 Cloves
- 1/2 cup Spiced Rum (optional – I just add but I don’t think many others do)
- 1 Thinly Sliced Orange (optional as well – mainly for decoration)
Combine all ingredients in a pot and allow to warm. I would start with a 1/4 cup of sugar and orange juice first and then taste. I do love mine sweet so I add quite a bit. If you are not a sweetie yourself, then I would use even less sugar. Again…taste along the way and you can add as necessary.
Yep…that’s it!
DO NOT LET IT BOIL as you will boil off the alcohol. And you don’t want it to sit on the stove for hours heating either.
If, however, you think you have heated it too long or high, just add more alcohol. 🙂 Thats where the Rum comes in handy for me.
Make sure you let me know how it turns out for you.
