Where To Lay Your Plate… a placemat tutorial

By: denise designed

Where else but on a placemat.  You don’t want to ruin that beautiful table of yours, do you?  I have some that I have been using for quite some time, but I don’t love them.  And I have been in search for the right ones for quite some time….that fit my design.

So I decided to make my own!!!!   I don’t know if they will last forever, but they do have a vinyl covering so they should last a bit if I take care of them.

finshed place mat

Here’s what you need:

Fabric – your choice to match your design

fabric

2 12inx18in Stiff Felt – 1 that matches your fabric as the visible backside and the other a just plain white one

Crafters Glue

HeatnBond Vinyl – iron-on

vinyl

and some Scissors – I won’t post a picture of those 🙂

First, cut your fabric about an inch to inches more on either side so that you can fold over

Then wrap your felt as if it were a present and glue  – good to use a white one so colors don’t show through on your fabric

Use a second piece of felt – should use one that matches the color scheme and glue to the back of the fabric glued felt – I used red as you can see in a picture above

Final step is the vinyl – cut 2 pieces

  • one about the same size as the fabric to wrap as though you did the fabric
  • second piece cut the same size as the felt

You will need to wrap the first piece and iron the fully covered side – follow instructions on HeatnBond Vinyl package

The second piece can be laid on the bottom side of the place mat and then ironed on – again  follow instructions on HeatnBond Vinyl package

You may need to clean the edges by ironing them as well, but be sure to read instructions as to how to iron on so as not to ruin your project.

I love the fabric you chose…and I always like having place-mats to save the table. Well done!
