Last year I was able to experience Hawaii. I don’t know about the other islands, but Maui has to have everything imported in, hence why it is so expensive. Because of that, the resort we stayed on has made an attempt to be self sufficient in as many areas as possible. One specific area is in utilizing their own garden to harvest their herbs, fruits and vegetables.
I had the opportunity to explore the garden and speak with the head gardener. I learned a lot from that visit, specifically the importance of bees.
It is said that bees help to increase the production in your fruit and vegetable garden through pollination. Additionally…it seems as though there are fewer and fewer bees, so by giving them flowers to pollinate, helps sustain them and their livelihood.
When I searched for flowers for my garden, I read that daisies were the best choice. I couldn’t find a daisy that I liked (wanted a smaller species and I don’t love their leaves) so I choose a flower that the garden expert at my local home improvement store recommended. I don’t truly know if the flower I chose will bring in those bees, but we shall see, when it finally warms up. If not, I have to go back and get the daisies after all. By that time, maybe there will more Daisy options available. Until then, I have planted these:
They definitely add a lot of color. I do like them a lot.
Your challenge is to pick some flowers that both add to your design and that attract the bees.
