I have a project I have been wanting to do for awhile…to decorate and clean-up the laundry room. I have accomplished a few things, but there is oh so much more to do. Its finally time to get ‘er done. I will highlight the overall room in a later post. Instead, today, we have a focus…storage.
Now while I do have a great set of cabinets over the washer and dryer:
More storage was needed.
There was empty wall space (unfortunately I don’t have a before picture) above the sink area (pictures later). Andreas was kind enough to hang shelves there for me:
Now what to do so I could hide those rags and just bottles of stuff. I didn’t want the space to look junky as it does on the 2nd shelf in the above picture. So I searched for a basket or container of some sorts. Do you know how hard it is to find options that don’t break the bank? I knew I wasn’t willing to pay a ton of money for storage that would be:
- Hidden behind a door and
- That was in the laundry room that no one else really sees but the family
As you can see in the picture…I did find some. However, I actually had to make them. I wish I could take the design credit myself, but I scoped a favorite site that, I am sure, we all go to for creative ideas and this is what I came up with:
How I made them?
I went to our local home improvement store and found a standard cardboard box (size was based on the measurements needed):
Then I decided on the colors that I wanted to use and bought some duct tape:
And there you have it! A box covered in duct tape, the new craze. In fact, such a craze that one of the reality fashion designer shows had the teams competing to design a prom dress using duct tape. Even the owner of the duct tape company was wearing duct tape (no not a prom dress, but a tie). What has this world come to? Ha!
You will have to wait to see the final design space when I highlight the room itself on a later post.
Your challenge: Are you struggling to find the right storage for your space? Think outside the box (Ha…no pun intended) and see what you come up with. Whether you use a box (as seen above) and paint, stencil, etc or whether you use a laundry basket and add ribbon, find something that fits your budget.
More storage ideas to come!!

Who would have thought 30-40 years ago that you could use Duck Tape could be this versatile. Also I must say that your brother has found many different uses for it as a child, to include trying to fix his Go-cart tire with it.

Ha! I don’t remember that, but great story!! And you are right…you would have thought that you could make and actually wear a tie made completely out of duct tape.
