Designing your walls can be so much fun, yet overwhelming. And it can be an effort that takes years to complete. Or you might never complete it as the walls are one of the easiest pieces of design to change, along with accessories. The beauty is that it is a reflection of your style, your life and can tell a story. They can be a collection of stories, that combined tell a complete one, or can be a collection of individual stories. Heck…maybe they don’t tell a story at all. Lets not make this too complicated.
So I hope you get the idea…almost anything goes and there are so many different things you can do. I have a lot of fabulous ideas to share with you. Some I have incorporated, some I still want to incorporate and some I don’t ever have any intention of including in my design, but think they are great ideas as well.
Today I am going to focus on one wall…my Moments in Time wall.
My house is not very large. Andreas is a German and believes in only having what you need. So I have had had to really utilize each space smartly (is that even a word?). But that also means that I have had to really think about the design of each wall space. When you walk into my foyer, I have made that a space where Emma can park her baby stuff. She has more baby doll stuff than I ever had. Which by the way, that is a story in itself. I live vicariously through her. And she definitely gets all the things that I wish I had as a kid. But isn’t that what its like being a parent? But I have digressed…lets get back on track. In this area, I wanted my wall to be something that made sense to Emma, that was specific to her (since her toys are here) and that could grow with her. So when I do move her toys and put a beautiful entry way piece (or at least decorate it in a more grownup and foyer themed manner), I can still keep the wall in place, if I so desire.
So here is what I came up with…
I travel weekly. I used to travel all the time zones. And one set of Emma’s grandparents are in Germany. So I wanted to be able to give her a spot that she could look at and see what time it was that either mommy was in, or her grandparents. So I designed my “Moments in Time” wall.
My “Moments in Time” doesn’t really have the kid-feel. It does flow with my other designs in that it is in the same style as all of my other designs. Clean. And once I change out the furniture and take out her toys, it can still remain there. I actually create the space around the wall, if I so choose.
How I did it?
I first figured out how many time zones, or places I wanted to represent. Then I set off to find the right clocks. It took months to find them all. I then had to think about the layout and the presentation. I decided to use a larger middle clock for our home and build all the clocks around it. Additionally…I had a large enough wall to spread it out, but not large enough to have multiple themes. That was important as well. You always want to make sure that the design is balanced and has balance in the space. Part of my format was utilizing vinyl word art. I thought that gave it another element, height and vertical spacing. I worked with Heaney Designs, a local business owner. You can find your own, look on Etsy or even find and design them on various online stores. Heck…if you don’t feel like you can be creative enough on your own, there are even ready made ones that you can find at any local store in which home decor is sold.
We have a clock for home, each time zone, Grandma (also known as GMA) and Oma (grandma in Germany).
What can you do? Maybe a wall of clocks isn’t what you want. Thats ok. But the goal is to use other ideas to inspire you.
Stay tuned for more ideas.
Your challenge: Pick a wall. Is it balanced? What is the theme? Does it even need a theme? Does it represent you, your family, your life? If not, start thinking about how you want to change it. And give me some of your ideas.
Good luck!
PS…I will be adding more pictures of wall clocks to give you more inspiration. Be on the lookout!
